You know I once knew this old lady. She was sick, and I was in her company while separating from the ex-partner, yes that one, the one you read about in some of these articles. To be honest, I needed her company just like she needed mine. It was a fair deal and a nice divine intervention when we did meet each other. She never met an “Indian person” in person (laughing :D). She was Welsh and seventy years old roughly. I think she was unsure of me I sensed, until one day she started losing consciousness and I caught her. I still ask, “How the hell did I catch her? I am pretty skinny.” It’s not the first time someone lost consciousness on me, though. Maybe it’s my South African awareness that gives me good reflexes. Okay, getting to the point. This lady was so organised, everything was in its place, and if she could stretch her hands out of the window, she’d keep the sheep right where they were; in the hills in front of her window. No, she isn’t OCD if that’s what you were thinking. The scenery in front of her kitchen window made you feel like you were in the hills in the countryside. Yes, that perfect country house feeling.
I’ve noticed something when I helped her pack her things when she couldn’t reach or if something was too heavy for her. See everything needed to have its place. Can you relate to this? I certainly can.
If you don’t declutter, it affects your mind.
Okay, imagine you finished work, you’re so tired, and when you get home, you just want to have dinner and relax. You walk through the door and enter a messy house. Your clothes are everywhere; you didn’t have time to dump them into the washing basket this morning. The bed hasn’t been made and the cup from this morning is still on the table. How do you feel when you arrive home to that state after coming home tired from work?
My answer, I didn’t have many of these days but, if I did have one of these days, then that must be the reason why I didn’t want to come into a home (and especially mine) like this.
If I can remember how it feels to try and find anything useful when I’m busying moving, then I remember many a time about the glass that I packed away. How many times I even said this sentence through all the moves, “Why didn’t I organise things before packing? Now I am thirsty, and the glasses are already packed away.” I learnt over time that I like to be organised and having unwanted rubbish stresses me out (hence why I had to get my ex-partner out). Did I just say that, that part in brackets? No, it wasn’t me I swear, the keyboard is typing on its own without my fingers.
Okay, so the just is that decluttering clears your mind space subconsciously because at the back of your mind you know that you need to clear the rubbish and whether you’re saying you have to or not you are feeling the pressure and subconsciously you have the clutter there.
Decluttering is a beautiful act of kindness if you’re giving it away to charity
Anything that I didn’t wear or use in say, a year that is invaluable, worn out, new but never worn, I give away to charity if it’s in good condition. If I know someone who might like something that I’m giving away which is brand new, then I’ll offer it to them and voila, there’s space in the cupboard to move my clothes from one side of the rail to the other side of the rail. Doesn’t that feel good? Instead of trying to squeeze it in, pushing the other clothes to the side when they won’t move just to fit it in. Imagine the feeling of wearing everything that you have at some point or the other and the idea that everything you have in your wardrobe is what you actually like that you are confused in a good way about what you want to wear. Now I am not saying declutter your purse and give your money away to a shopkeeper ?.
Now I’m saying declutter the purse or the wallets (not the money) the receipts etc. The act of decluttering your wallet or the purse allows abundance to come into your space.
So, the act of decluttering is removing the old so that the new can enter.
Decluttering things that you don’t use and keep because of sentimental value.
A…O… now, this is a big one.
Did you know you’re holding onto old emotions and old energy by doing this? Let bygones be bygones. Not only bygones but why we’re holding onto the dead people? You might not agree here but, I think we should let the dead people be happy in their new home and let go of what’s keeping them alive in a big way to the real world. Let it go and start fresh. Hey, I’m not saying let go of the crown of all the queens who have left this world. Cumon, please keep the diamonds and if you’re okay with selling them then do it. ?
Decluttering helps you create a healthy space and gets rid of dust.
Dust and dust mites are attracted to clutter. If you got allergies or asthma, then decluttering is a healthy practice. A personal tip was when I have everything in its place, no rubbish lying around, and with the window open meditation feels great, the air feels clean. I feel as if I have even decluttered my emotions and whatever baggage I might have been carrying subconsciously.
Decluttering helps get rid of physical hazards and creates more space.
Getting rid of old furniture or the things you’re keeping because you think you will fix them one day or you never got round to getting rid of is a hazard for others. Getting rid of it makes more space, and when things are packed away and in its place, there’s a better flow of energy through the house.
