Dear reader,
You’re here because there is something innate within you that you want to do differently with your words. That’s why you’re here. You’re here because you want your content to stand out, even if you don’t know it yet.
You’re at the right place! If I missed anything out in this article, please leave me a comment about what that is, or what you’re doing that’s working that I haven’t mentioned. I really would love to know more tricks and hacks.
Before we dive in, let’s take a dip. This is no place for bellyflops, I don’t do floppy words…
Let’s begin with the intention. Are you just randomly here to get ideas without really knowing your aim? If that’s the case, let’s plan by asking the question every company or entrepreneur asks. Most importantly, if you’re the reader, did you get the information you were looking for?
The Billion Pound question
Why does text presentation matter?
See these words I am writing today on a laptop, on a Word document. See how far we have come since the dawn of time. If I wanted to delete something, I can hit delete, backspace, highlight the entire sentence and just go ta ta on delete.
Remember the days when internet or a computer didn’t make it to every household?
The days we wrote on paper… OoO Lord! Save the trees!
And back in time to the days, how and where people wrote scriptures. Remember those old maps? Now we go to Google.
Feeling inspired now? If you’re still here, I’m doing a good job hey :D! Let me not jinx it, let me ink it…
Firstly, if a reader has arrived at your content, let’s not waste the effort and time we’re putting into drawing out the content. For one, we’re grateful to have a reader. Two, it would be great that they stick around, and three, the content should make it worthwhile.
a) Imagine if we presented words without proper layout?
As encapsulating as your words may sound, if they have no order to them, no style or tone, no spacing, pictures to make the words engaging to bring in the concept of visualisation.
This is what happens:
- There will be no colour in the message.
- The message has no integrity because the words have no personality to them.
- The communication won’t go through confidently and effectively.
It is like cooking food for the sake of cooking with no seasoning or taste, or doing it for the sake of doing it.
Now isn’t that a complete waste of time?
Honestly I’ll be out of that restaurant if the soup of words on that menu had no spices. That would be my first impression.
“The first impressions are important when you pick up a script”- Dennis Farina (1944 – 2013)
b) Line spacing, typography, formatting, font styling helps to digest the content
You might be a startup still trying to get money to invest into branding, company logos and styling guides. There’s a lot you can do yourself in the meantime. Genuinely help your clients by writing quality content solving a problem to their challenges. While doing that, take pride in your words. Adding to the saturated market with already so much content going around and still giving our readers eye problems, let’s save them money and help them keep their valuable eyesight.
I mean, the same goes for personal hygiene and image. Being a CEO of a large company, maintaining professional standards is a norm. People consider the sort of role models and the role they play to their children, family and those outside who look up to them and their company’s values.
Writing content that’s not easy to digest and not laid out properly doesn’t make the message credible. It distracts the flow. Most importantly, the spirit of the message is unlikely to go through. This is almost the same when it comes to spoken words.
c) Keep the balance, what floats your boat can sink it
Some copywriters can really get creative by working on the design as part of their writing, having equilibrium is pivotal.
I remember someone saying, “Your copy is a boat and your design is the ocean”.
I remember they said that the two were made for each other but they have to work together. Having too many designs and visuals may mean that you’re heading for a marketing shipwreck. Don’t drown your content with the visuals, your readers might jump.
d) You don’t have to be a master of words when you can play with art
“The future belongs to those who learn more skills and combine them in creative ways”. – Robert Green
Taking a little bit extra time to beautify the essence of your words outwardly is like adding an accessory to the already wonderful person; that is feeling enough within themselves. Spirit and attitude add to creativity, making words stand out and stretch out, grabbing the reader.
Now that’s how to successfully transform your words into art.
